Just the recipe. A midcentury family recipe, from my Grandmother. Certified “very good!“. Delicious old school cake brownies. No need to have chocolate squares on hand. Great for parties and potlucks!

Servings: 20 Calories: 220 ea. unfrosted Equipment: small saucepan or microwaveable bowl, rubber spatula, mixing fork, large bowl, 11×16 baking pan. Oven: 400 degrees.

  • 2 C white granulated Sugar
  • 2 C all purpose Flour
  • 1t baking soda
  • 1 C Butter
  • 3 T Cocoa powder
  • 1 C boiling Water
  • 1/2 C Buttermilk or substitute (2t of lemon juice or vinegar in 1/2 C milk)
  • 2 Eggs, beaten
  • 1t Vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

In a large mixing bowl, mix the sugar, flour and baking soda. In saucepan or microwaveable bowl, melt the butter then add the cocoa powder. Add boiling water, stir well. Add the warm mixture to the dry ingredients and mix. Once mixed well, add buttermilk, beaten egg, vanilla and salt. Mix once again, thoroughly. Grease baking pan, including sides then pour batter evenly into the pan. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Serve warm or allow to cool, then frost as you wish.

Bon Appetit!
